Privacy note: the selected PDF and the password you enter are processed in your browser. 2PDF2 does not intentionally upload either one to its own server for unlocking. The webpage still loads the QPDF WebAssembly engine and other code from third-party code-delivery services, and may connect to analytics or advertising services as described in our Privacy Policy.
How to unlock a PDF
- Select Choose PDF file and add one password-protected PDF.
- Enter the correct current password.
- Confirm that you are authorized to decrypt the document.
- Select Unlock PDF and keep the browser tab open during processing.
- Download the new unencrypted PDF after validation finishes.
What does unlocking a PDF do?
PDF password security encrypts document data. Unlocking creates a new copy without that encryption so the new file can be opened without entering the original password. The original protected file on your device is not modified.
Why this tool uses QPDF WebAssembly
QPDF performs structural PDF transformations rather than rendering each page into a picture. That approach is better suited to removing PDF encryption while retaining the original document content and structure.
What this tool does not do
No password cracking
2PDF2 does not brute-force, guess, recover, or search for an unknown PDF password.
No server-side decryption
The selected PDF and password are processed locally by the browser-side QPDF WebAssembly engine.
No automatic rights bypass
The tool is intended for documents you own or are authorized to unlock using the correct password.
No rasterization
The unlock process does not intentionally flatten every page into a JPG image.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know the PDF password?
Yes. This tool is designed to remove protection when you know the correct password. It does not crack unknown passwords.
Is my password sent to 2PDF2?
No. The password is passed to the QPDF engine running in your browser and is not intentionally sent to a 2PDF2 server.
Will the original protected PDF be changed?
No. The original file remains unchanged. The tool creates a new unlocked PDF for download.
Will selectable text stay selectable?
The unlock process is structural rather than image-based, so it does not intentionally rasterize document text. Preservation still depends on the structure and condition of the source PDF.
Why does PowerPoint-style printing or screenshot conversion behave differently?
Printing or screenshot-based workarounds can flatten pages into images and lose interactive PDF content. This tool instead uses QPDF to remove encryption from the PDF structure.
Can an existing digital signature become invalid?
Yes. Rewriting or decrypting a digitally signed PDF changes the file, so an existing certificate-based signature may no longer validate.
