PDF permissions

Allow printing Permit full-quality printing in PDF readers that honor permissions. Allow copying Permit text and graphic extraction in readers that honor permissions. Allow editing Permit document modifications in readers that honor permissions.

Important: PDF permission flags are not guaranteed digital-rights management. Different PDF readers may enforce printing, copying, and editing restrictions differently. Password encryption protects document access; permission flags should not be treated as an absolute method of preventing copying.

Encryption: the generated file uses QPDF 256-bit PDF encryption. The source PDF is structurally rewritten and encrypted rather than converted into page screenshots.

Keep your password safe. 2PDF2 does not store a recovery copy of the password. Losing the password may prevent you from opening the protected file later.

Digitally signed PDFs: encrypting and rewriting an existing certificate-signed PDF changes the document file and may invalidate its digital signature.

Privacy note: the selected PDF and passwords are processed in your browser. 2PDF2 does not intentionally upload them to its own server for encryption. The webpage loads the QPDF WebAssembly engine and supporting code from third-party code-delivery services, and may connect to analytics or advertising services as described in our Privacy Policy.

How to password protect a PDF

Select Choose PDF file and add one unprotected PDF.
Create a password and enter it again for confirmation.
Optionally open Advanced protection settings to choose PDF permission flags.
Select Protect PDF and keep the browser tab open while encryption runs.
Download the new encrypted PDF and test it by opening it with the password you created.

What protection is added?

This tool creates a new encrypted PDF that requires the chosen opening password. QPDF is used to apply 256-bit PDF encryption while preserving the document structure instead of converting every page into an image.

Opening password and owner password

Opening password

This is the password the recipient enters when opening the protected PDF. Store it somewhere safe because 2PDF2 cannot recover it.

Owner password

The owner password is separate from the opening password and is used by the PDF security system for permission control. When you leave it blank, 2PDF2 creates a random separate owner password for the encryption operation.

256-bit encryption

The browser-side QPDF engine uses 256-bit PDF encryption rather than older weak 40-bit or non-AES 128-bit protection.

Local processing

Your PDF and passwords are handled in the browser rather than uploaded to a 2PDF2 server for protection.

Printing, copying, and editing permissions

PDF encryption can include permission flags for printing, text or graphic extraction, and document modification. These flags are interpreted by PDF readers and are not guaranteed to be enforced identically by every application. They should be viewed as reader permissions, not as unbreakable DRM.

Does protection reduce PDF quality?

The protection process encrypts and rewrites the PDF structure. It does not intentionally rasterize pages into JPEG images, so existing text, vectors, images, links, and other PDF objects are not intentionally reduced in resolution by this tool.

Is the Protect PDF tool free to use?

Yes. The current 2PDF2 Protect PDF tool can be used without a paid account.

Is my PDF password sent to 2PDF2?

No. The password is supplied to the QPDF WebAssembly engine running in your browser and is not intentionally sent to a 2PDF2 server.

What happens if I forget the password?

2PDF2 does not store or recover your password. Keep a secure copy before deleting the original unprotected PDF.

Can I protect a PDF that already has a password?

The current Protect PDF tool expects an unencrypted source document. Unlock an authorized protected PDF first, then apply the new password.

Are PDF permission restrictions guaranteed?

No. Printing, copying, and editing permission flags depend on the PDF reader. Password encryption itself protects access to the file, while permission flags are not guaranteed DRM.

Will protecting a digitally signed PDF affect its signature?

It can. Encryption rewrites the PDF file, which may invalidate an existing certificate-based digital signature.
