How to repair a PDF

  1. Select Choose PDF file and add the PDF that is giving you errors.
  2. Leave Smart Repair selected for the recommended recovery sequence.
  3. Select Repair PDF and keep the browser tab open during processing.
  4. The tool validates the recovered PDF and counts the readable pages.
  5. Download the repaired copy and review every important page before replacing the original file.

What types of PDF problems can be repaired?

Broken cross-reference data

QPDF can attempt to reconstruct cross-reference information when objects exist in the file but the PDF indexing structure is damaged.

Malformed PDF structure

A fresh structural rewrite can correct some trailer, object-reference, stream, or syntax problems that prevent strict readers from opening a file normally.

Reader compatibility errors

Ghostscript Deep Rebuild can sometimes interpret a problematic source and create a fresh PDF that is easier for ordinary PDF viewers to open.

Browser-side recovery

Repair processing occurs locally in the browser rather than uploading the selected document to a 2PDF2 repair server.

Smart Repair versus Deep Rebuild

Smart Repair starts with QPDF because QPDF is designed for structural, content-preserving PDF transformations. If QPDF cannot produce a valid repaired file, Smart Repair then attempts Ghostscript pdfwrite. Deep Rebuild can recover some files that a structural rewrite cannot, but it may alter more advanced PDF features.

Does Repair PDF restore missing pages?

Not when the page data is physically absent from the file. Repair software can reconstruct damaged PDF structure only from data that still exists and can be interpreted. Files that were truncated during copying, storage failure, download interruption, or disk corruption may have unrecoverable content.

Does repair reduce quality?

QPDF Structural Repair does not intentionally rasterize pages and is the preferred option for preserving the original PDF objects. Ghostscript Deep Rebuild also uses PDF output rather than intentionally creating JPG screenshots, but it interprets and rewrites the document, so some content representation or advanced features can change.

Is the Repair PDF tool free to use?

Yes. The current 2PDF2 Repair PDF tool can be used without a paid account.

Is my damaged PDF uploaded to 2PDF2?

No. The selected PDF is processed in your browser by the recovery engines and is not intentionally uploaded to a 2PDF2 repair server.

Which repair method should I choose?

Start with Smart Repair. It prioritizes QPDF structural recovery and automatically tries Ghostscript only when the first method cannot create a valid output.

Will the repaired PDF look exactly the same?

Structural Repair has the best chance of preserving the original document structure. Deep Rebuild prioritizes recovering readable page content, so advanced PDF features can differ.

Can this repair a PDF that is completely corrupted?

Not always. If required objects, page streams, images, fonts, or large sections of the original file are missing, those missing bytes cannot be recreated automatically.

Can I repair a password-protected PDF?

This tool does not request a source password. Unlock an authorized protected PDF first, then repair the unencrypted copy.

Should I delete the original file after repair?

Keep the original until you have opened the repaired PDF and reviewed every important page, attachment, form, annotation, and other required feature.
